British expats or expatriates if you prefer, if asked, would probably gives a number of different reasons for choosing this lifestyle. But before we look at that perhaps its a good idea to try and define exactly what an expatriate is.
Well the dictionary gives us a few choices:
- To give up residence in ones homeland.
- One who has renounced ones native land.
- An exile.
OK so we know what we are, but why did we choose to be British Expats?
Well despite the number of possible answers that might be given I think it largely boils down to these choices:
- Taking retirement, perhaps early, and living in a country with a pleasant climate and low cost of living.
- For educational purposes e.g an overseas university course.
- Things that effect UK lifestyle like crime, immigration policy and taxation.
Taking my own case numbers 1 & 4 apply.
But what about you? What was your motivator to take up the expat lifestyle?
