According to Border and Immigration Minister Phil Woolas the right to being British is a privilege that must be earned by immigrants to the UK. Under sweeping new proposals the Labour Government plan to introduce, potential citizens will need to prove that they are/have:
1. Making an economic contribution to the country.
2. The required skills.
3. Able to read, write and speak English.
4. Taking part in voluntary or civic work.
A person, whose contribution will judged against the above criteria, will then receive points which they can use in their citizenship claim. Anyone breaking the law or contributing to anti-social behaviour can have points deducted.
Public consultation is invited until 26th October 2009. If you wish to participate in the “earning the right to stay:a new points test for citizenship” you can do so online.
