Moving Back to the UK

For many British expats like myself moving back to the UK  has proved a relatively straightforward process. I completed the move in August 2011 having spent nearly four years living in Thailand.

I have found that settling myself back in the UK has involved things that broadly speaking fall under the headings of financial, health and establishing a credit history. The latter having particular implications if you need to buy a property, transport or other essentials like insurance by any means other than paying cash.

Over the next few months I will be writing some articles detailing my first hand experience of re-establishing myself in the UK. Here is a general overview of the subject matter to be covered under these headings.

Financial Implications of Moving Back to the UK

Clearly there are financial implications when moving back to the UK. However I am not going to discuss the difference in the cost of living between home and away or whether or not you can afford to live here(only you will know that), but instead I would like to explore things like setting up a bank account, dealing with age related pensions and allowances/benefits.

Health Care Implications on Moving Back to the UK

There may be health care implications on moving back to the UK. Returning British Expats are entitled to emergency NHS treatment facilities as soon as they return. However registering with a GP and maintaining continuity to pre-existing prescribed medications or treatment plans may be slightly more difficult and seems to vary from region to region.

Establishing a Credit History on Moving Back to the UK

Whether we like it or not if you want to establish full banking facilities or obtain any form of credit to finance things like a home and car then you need an established credit history. British expats who have been overseas for some time without financial links to the UK may have issues re-establishing a credit history.

Look out for the first article in the series on the financial implications of moving back to the UK which will be published before Christmas.
